DALLAS (April 2, 2005) - Kawasaki’s James Stewart, of Haines City, Fla., became the first African-American to win a 250cc THQ World Supercross GP/THQ AMA Supercross Series race at Texas Stadium in front of 43,276 fans. Kawasaki’s Grant Langston, of Murrieta, Calif., extended his season points lead to seven in 125cc Eastern Regional THQ AMA Supercross Series competition, picking up his third win on the season.
En route to winning his first 250cc main event, Stewart earned the $1,500 Butterfinger Crisp Holeshot Award with Yamaha’s Chad Reed, of Murrieta, Calif., and Suzuki’s Ricky Carmichael, of Havana, Fla., in tow. On Lap 3 Carmichael and Reed passed one another with Reed holding the number two position. On the last lap Reed crashed, allowing Carmichael to move into second place. Stewart led all 20 laps of the main event while Carmichael finished second and Reed third. Carmichael has a 31-point lead in THQ AMA Supercross Series points.
“It took me three races to win my first 250cc race,” said Stewart. “I didn’t have a front brake for most of the race, so it was tough, but I made it work. I am so happy; I just want to tell my parents thanks for everything. I have one under my belt and now I know how it feels.”
“On the last 10 laps I was catching Chad (Reed),” said Carmichael. I will take a pass any way I can get it. I know Chad had some lappers to deal with but that’s part of the game.”
Honda’s Steve Boniface, of Murrieta, Calif., won the $1,000 Butterfinger Crisp Holeshot Award in 125cc Eastern Regional THQ AMA Supercross Series competition, but was passed by Langston on lap 3. Suzuki’s Millsaps, of Cairo, Ga., chased Langston for the last 10 laps and was unable to make the pass. Langston picked up the win, Millsaps was second and Matt Walker third.
“It’s great to have a cushion going into the last race of the season in Pontiac (Michigan) next weekend, but this is racing so anything can happen.”
“I gave it my 100% best,” said Millsaps. “I had a bad start and Langston rode a great race.”
The Next race takes place Saturday, April 9, at the Silverdome in Pontiac, Mich. Tonight’s race airs on ESPN2 Sunday, April 3 at 12:30 p.m. EST.
