| ok ivv been lokking through dirt bike ads and seeing that theres equipment. do you need all this stuff i now about a helmet but what about other stuff like gloves, boots, shirt, pands and gogles |

| hey well it depends! if you are just riding for fun and trailing around then all you really need is some boots( they dont have to be dirtbike boots) and a helmet! but if your going through mud and dirt and riding with other ppl then it is good to have goggles and gloves, and just where like a t-shirt and jeans or w/e! but if you are racing then your proboly going to need all the stuff you just mentioned! cya -alexa- |

When it comes to safety gear, you need to decide how hard you are going to crash. Are you just going to tip the bike over, or are you going to run into something? What happens if some part of the bike fails? I've seen someone's axle nut fall off, the axle slip out, and the wheel lock up. The guy was a good rider and didn't go down, but it was the rear wheel. What if it had been the front? You just never know what will happen, so it makes good sense to be reasonably protected. You may think you will take it easy, but you can't control what's around you. What if another rider crashes into you? Maybe it's someone you don't even know that you didn't know was riding near you.
I used to ride in just a helmet, gloves, and boots (I should hope long pants goes without saying). I rode that way for years, and I crashed or got hurt occasionally. A few years ago, my best friend gave me a chest protector as a wedding gift. He said it was a gift for my wife, if you catch my meaning. Anyway, since I've gotten used to riding with the chest protector and had the opportunity to crash test it, I can't believe I rode without one for so many years. Its amazing what you go through with the right protection without getting hurt that bad.
I still have a nasty scar covering my right kneecap from laying a dirtbike down on a gravel road. I picked the rocks out of the wound myself. Even a cheap set of kneepads would have saved me from that. This Fall I went over the bars at about 25mph. I hit the ground hard; hard enough that the front of my helmet left a bruise on my forehead for a week. My shoulder took the brunt of the hit, but it didn't hurt that bad after a half hour or so, and it was a hard hit. Two days later, you know what hurt the most? My unprotected shins had banged into the handlebars as I flew off the bike. |

I don't use my head much when I'm riding, but it's attached so I have to bring it along. So I take the innertube from a 50 and over-inflate it slightly, pulling it snuggly onto my head. "That's stupid!" I hear you saying -- and you're right... what about the TOP of my head? That's why I duct tape one of my wife's metal mixing bowls to the top of the tube.
Goggles are a little expensive, so I put one layer of plastic food wrap around my head. It helps having something to poke nostril holes nearby. It took me 3 or 4 minutes to find a sharp pencil the first time and I nearly passed out. If you have a problem with bugs up your nose put a straw in each nostril with a little bit of tape so they point backwards. This also allows you to breathe if you end up face first in the muck.
As far as everything else goes... flesh heals and bones mend FOR FREE -- so why would I buy gear?
