I purchased an old 1986 Honda CR250 off eBay. It ran, but not well. I am fairly mechanical with cars, so I decided to try my hand with a bike and broke the old 2 stroker down. Had the cylinder honed, put in new Weisco piston kit, with rings, new V-Force reed valve (old one had a hole right through one of the reeds), new choke / idle valve (as I broke the old one), new exhaust pipe, cleaned up the exhaust valves, carb, air cleaner, etc. Put her all back together with a new top-end gasket set, torquing all bolts as specified in the Clymer manual.
Tonight, my foot a sore from kicking. Simply can't get her to fire at all. Took the plug out and can see it is getting wet, so I must be flooding her a bit.
One thing that concerns me... I have a relatively new spark plug, but I wouldn't call the spark "bold". I did the standard test of removing the plug, putting it in the boot, grounding it to the cylinder and watching for a spark as I kicked. I have to kick pretty hard to get a spark and I wouldn't call it a bold spark. Perhaps this is my problem? I took a piece of steel wool to all the electrical connections and put some fresh dielectric grease on them, but that didn't make much a difference. I will try a new plug tomorrow, but I doubt I will see much improvement in the spark. Not even sure what the spark should look like, so it may or may not be my issue.
Lastly, I tried spraying some starting fluid in the plug hole, still no combustion. Using fresh 91 octain gas with the appropriate amount of Bel-Ray 2 stroke oil.
Looking for any advice on getting the old CR250 to run.
I am new to the forum, but hopefully after this my experience, I will be able to contribute. I truly enjoyed the whole rebuild experience (except the not starting part).
Thank You! |
