Well the trusty ol’ XR600 has been in moth balls since sometime around the turn of the century. I just had the carburetor scraped and the, what used to be, gas replaced. I changed the oil and put in fresh filters. Put the hand guards back on, swapped out the 8” Baja headlamp for the street-legal one, and took it for a test ride. I forgot how much I like that thing, despite it being so big an heavy.
So now there are only a few things getting in my way from catching some sweet dual sport rides this year. First, I want to swap the big Baja fuel tank for the smaller stock one. The range will be fine and the smaller tank will be a welcome to the ergos. Next, one of the turn signals isn’t working, I’m sure this is just a connection issue that was the result of me “tidying” up the wires the other night. Moving on, there’s a small heat shield rattle that I really need to deal with, the noise is deafening. I also need to swap out the rubber. I’ve never run dual sport tires on it before so I think I’ll grab a set of Dunlops. I can’t find any reviews of them, so I figure why not get a set and write one. Lastly, I need to get someone to ride with. I think I almost have Bryce talked into it, but his KLX hasn’t been started in a while and last time I was at his place there were pieces missing off it. I don’t know what that’s about, but I’ll keep badgering him.
Meanwhile, I really want to do some riding in the California Gold Country (along highway 49). I got a few maps but don’t see a whole lot of off-road adventure. If any of you has some dual sport experience in that area and has some tips, drop me a line. |
