CHICAGO -- A federal jury on Monday ordered Clear Channel Communications Inc. to pay a rival promoter $90 million for engaging in anticompetitive behavior to land a deal to promote motorcycle races.
Chicago-based Jam Productions Ltd. had accused Clear Channel of illegally using its entertainment industry might to scuttle Jam's bid to promote Supercross dirt-track motorcycle racing at arenas across the country.
Jurors ruled that while Clear Channel did not violate antitrust laws, the company had intentionally interfered with Jam's contract and its business relationship with the American Motorcycle Association. They ordered Clear Channel to pay $17 million in lost profits and $73 million in punitive damages.

Garmin International, Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd. (Nasdaq: GRMN), today announced that it has received a waiver from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) that allows its Rino series of GPS-integrated radios to transmit and receive location data on the General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) spectrum.
The FCC approval expands the Rino radio’s unique and patented ability to send and receive a user’s GPS position to other Rino users within a five mile range – up from a previous maximum of two miles on the Family Radio Service (FRS) frequency.
“This new capability more than doubles the effective range of the Rino’s position reporting feature,” said Gary Kelley, Garmin’s director of marketing. “We’re pleased to offer this feature for new customers as well as those who already own and use Rinos in their outdoor adventures.”

Jurors heard opening arguments Tuesday in a lawsuit alleging Clear Channel Communications illegally blocked Chicago-based rival JamSports from promoting "supercross" dirt-bike events.
The legal battle, set in the courtroom of U.S. District Judge Matthew Kennelly, pits Chicago impresario Jerry Mickelson against Clear Channel Communications, a media behemoth that dominates arena concerts and radio across the country. According to Mickelson -- founder of local concert promoter Jam Productions -- Clear Channel used its market power to keep JamSports out of the supercross business.
But Clear Channel's lawyer Chris Gair painted his client's business practices as typical.

Written by: Ty Van Hooydonk Irvine, CA – 2/3/2005 New motorcycle sales continued to climb last year, rising through the one million mark and reaching levels not seen since the 1970s. The Motorcycle Industry Council is currently estimating 2004 two-wheeler sales of nearly 1,050,000, and the upward trend continues as the industry has sold increasing numbers of bikes for the 12th straight year.
Compared with 2003, sales of the major brands last year rose 4.7 percent. Among those 12 brands, cruiser models, sportbikes, touring bikes, traditional (or “naked”) bikes, and dual-purpose bikes led the way in percentage increases. Cruisers remained the top sellers, followed by sportbikes and touring bikes.
