Hiking Mountain Biking and Fishing; Any time of the year, best starting in June, the trails at Apex are unending. This is an old mining region, so there are historic mine camps, stagecoach stations, roads, trails, mine shafts, lakes and streams throughout the whole area. There are series of trails that are a mixture of old dirt roads, with single track trail shortcuts mixed in for the more adventurous. The Home Trail is fairly easy with minimal climbing and leaves from just outside Saddleback and loops back home no matter which version you take; the shortest trail is a 45 minute hike, the longest version is 1.5 hour hike . The Green Grind however, also leaves from Saddleback Lodge, is mostly single track trail which winds it's way to the alpine meadows at the top of Green Mountain, about a 1500' elevation gain. The views are spectacular! Give yourself 2 hours for a fit person to hike this trail. The Orange Trails loops around the back of the Apex bowls, is not well marked, and is a tough 4 hour hike, but what a hike! Other trails take you around Nickel Plate Lake; out to Sheep Rock Mountain, around Riordan Mountain; down to the French Mine, even down the Donkey trail to Hedley. Some of these trails are currently not well marked, but we are in the process of improving them. Please use at your own risk. Call Saddleback Lodge for guided hikes. Dual Sport Bike Tours; This area, including Green Mountain Road is known as some of the best bike tours around, well with a dual sport bike, you can combine amazing paved roads with great dirt roads. Deezul at Saddleback Lodge has his dual sport bike and can send you in the right direction. Coming from Vancouver; take the Hedley Nickel Plate Road to Saddleback Lodge, have dinner, stay the night and then take Keremeos Creek Road to Green Mountain Road etc. and on through the Okanagan or over to the Kootenays. The area is also great for dirt biking! Horse Back Riding; Apex Resort has a barn and pens; call Saddleback Lodge to arrange to bring your horses up, stay the night at Saddleback Lodge, and ride the alpine trails here. When it gets too hot in the valley, this is the perfect place to ride in the summer! Barb would love an excuse to guide you on your ride this summer! The South Okanagan Horse Association is having 2 poker rides at Apex this summer; Sunday July 9 and Monday August 7. Call Barb for more info, or check out the SOHA website; www.soha-online.com Again, Saddleback Lodge has a special lodging rate for this event. Mine Tours; This area is famous for historic mines; the Mascot Mine now has guided tours out of Hedley, just 45 minutes from Saddleback Lodge, while the mine itself is just 15 minutes away. It may be possible to book a group tour and meet the tour bus at the mine site if you are staying at the lodge. Check out the website for more info; www.mascotmine.com/ Saddleback Lodge has been a regular spot for families coming for the Okanagan Hockey School. Try staying up at Apex, just 30 minutes drive from the Okanagan Hockey School, and enjoy the cooler air, away from the crowds in town. Many of the parents use the lodge as a gathering spot for their group of families from the team, and test out the local wineries and gold courses while their kids are playing hockey. Make yourself at home and use the kitchen, deck and barbeque for your dinners.
